Rules and guidelines for character development
DMRP is an all original character roleplay set in the 1790s. Characters start out as first years aged eleven and progress through Hogwarts. We have various rules for making up characters which are displayed below. The actual character card form for you to fill in is here. Alternatively, starting a new topic in this area will automatically produce it for you to fill in. You should also check out our guidelines on the Eighteenth century and the forum rules which can be found here.Any questions should be directed to the admins - Professor Llwellyn or Professor Denman
The rules
*The following are banned on DMRP, therefore there is no place for them in your character card:
-Self Harm
- Incest, Rape and child abuse
Your character's background may not have been perfect but neither are they the product of a broken home with a violent father and a psychopathic mother. If in doubt ask an Admin
*Your character is an eleven year old human with normal coloured hair and eyes and limited magical abilities. They are not sexy!
*DMRP does not have face claims, please check the forum rules for guidelines on posting pictures of your character
*You are not allowed to play twins
*Your character is not the child of the Minister of Magic or the King of England, this would give them too much power in the game. The admins may veto other backgrounds we feel are inappropriate.
Guidelines
-Try to include a lot of detail in your card, it helps us sort you. But also leave some room for your character to develop as you play them.
-The character card has a lot of helpful hints, it's ok to respond to those hints!
-Voldemort will not be born for over a hundred years! Therefore there are no death eaters. Your character can come from a family of dark wizards but you will need to give details on their aims and activities.
- Hogwarts is a school for British students. Your character must be British. They may have a foreign parent or live abroad but you need to provide a convincing backstory.
MARY-SUE/GARY STU – These types of characters are not only unoriginal, they are un-fun to play with. Mary-sue is the perfect, beautiful character with either a wonderful background of luxury or a tragic one where she is defying all odds to be a wonderful person despite the unpleasant past. She is friend to all, receives perfect marks in class, and her only flaw is forgetfulness or clumsiness *insert apologetic giggle*. Gary-stu is the evil twin of Mary-sue. He comes from a very dark family and knows how to use all 3 unforgivable curses before he even steps foot into Hogwarts. He is driven by anger and evil and only serves to make professors angry and his fellow students miserable.
If your character is too Sue or Stu the staff will ask you to rework and think deeper about your character before the card is accepted.
Relationships to canon characters- your character can have the same surname as a minor character in the Harry Potter books, but not a major character. If in doubt as to what constitutes a major character ask an admin. Bear in mind that as DMRP is set 200 years before JK's books you have little to gain from this, beyond being part of an old wizarding family. You cannot be the direct descendent/heir of a Hogwarts founder (but pretending to be is ok).
Second characters
Second characters are allowed but may not be in the same year group as your first character. The admins may say you cannot have a second character if your first one isn't developed and played properly. However if they trust you and admire your RP skills they may give you greater freedom to be the purple haired, half giant descendant of Godric Gryffindor.
Partial exemptions to the above rules may be granted by the admins but only to people we can trust not to abuse them. The above guidance is not exhaustive, you may be asked to change other aspects of your card. Any staff member can be asked for guidance on card writing, but the word of the admins is final.
