The large, ornate clock hanging from the wall struck the hour and Eleanor neither jumped nor looked up, but continued to write slowly and carefully to a longtime family friend living in Germany. The scare of the smallpox and other such matters were hinted at, but Eleanor preferred to keep such dark topics out of their already infrequent correspondence. Just as she signed her name with a flourish, she heard a knock at the door.

The woman put the quill down in her inkwell and folded her hands before her, away from the drying parchment, and bade whomever it was to enter. She certainly hoped it was the young Glynn boy who had caused such a raucous in class, as him being any later or not turning up at all would only result in further punishments. She had spent the day deciding on a fitting sentence as is.

"Please come in," she welcomed.

There was no hiding from it, no ignoring it, not even conveniently forgetting it.  Maddock had detention and the fate for missing detention might have been far worse than the original deed indeed.  Maddock had to swallow his pride and report to detention over such a small incident.  Well he viewed it small.  No one was hurt and honestly, the class was about sending attack spells out and useing a defense spell...in defense.  How was he going to practice his shield if no one was going to attack him?  The whole matter seemed rediculous to him.

Swallowing his pride, he stopped hesitating and finally knocked on the door.  He had to face the woman sooner or later, he might as well get it over with now.  Hearing a voice behind the door invite him in, Maddock grasped the door knob and slowly pushed the door open.  A saddened gulp made his eyes filter down to the floor for a brief moment before looking back to the Professor with a new found strength.
"Do I still have detention Professor Penvellyn?"  He asked, thinking for a moment she would find pity and dismiss him for having the nerves to just even show up.  It wasn't that he was brave, it was more of a side winding manner of looking like a sad puppy dog for a moment, gaining her pity and slipping out of trouble...assuming she fell for it.

If there was one thing Eleanor had learned in all of her years as an instructor, it was to never be soft on children. Certainly they needed a little more hand holding than teenagers, but not at certain times and absolutely not when they were being punished. Though, if she hadn’t had so much time to practice her stern face, Eleanor might have laughed at the boy who questioned her as he walked in. “I’m afraid so, Mr. Glynn.” She said so with no remorse and nodded him toward the spare desk that had been brought in from one of the classrooms as well as a wooden seat that sat ready for him.

Are you having trouble in any of your classes?” Penvellyn asked. She stood and moved toward one of her bookshelves, carefully examining the spines. But she didn’t pull one off until he had answered her question.

The moment was sad.  Maddy's cute little puppy dog eyes didn't work and he, indeed, had detention still with Professor Penvellyn.  He felt the measure of defeat and moved in to the seat that seemed to be directed for him to sit at.  His shoes eched in the lonely stone room with only the Professor to keep him company.  He didn't mean to hit anyone, and to add mention to the matter, each person had successfully produced their shield charm as they were taught.  His little stunt was more like practice for everyone than something that should be punishable, atleast in his mind.  After some consideration, Maddock would understand that he was receiving punishment not because he shot spells at unsuspecting persons, but more so because Professor Penvellyn, herself, might have been hit.  But that woman was a practiced Professor.  Out of all the persons in the room, she should have had the best chance of muttering complete jibberish and keeping herself protected.

He took his seat and waited for the inevitable to come about.  Maybe he'd get off easy with just a few lines on a piece of parchment or a strict and stern talking to.  Maybe it would be as quick as a ruler across his knuckles.  That was the more preferable punishment, he was used to that from his nanny back home.  That's how she kept order with all the Glynn children.  Maddy suspected that that woman would have held him out a 3rd floor window had she been strong enough, just to scare the children into acting properly.

It was the Professor who broke the silence as she looked for the right book to pull off the shelf.
"What?"  His attentions were brought to the woman, answering her in the typical childlike fashion of proving they never really listened or paid attention.  Only after the stupid reply came out of his mouth that her words actually made sense to him.
"Oh, no ma'am.  Most of my classes are pretty easy.  The only class I have problems with is Defense Class."  He motioned to the classroom now becoming the detention room.

"Well that and Potions.  I suspect that's because Potions is like cooking and me mum always says I should have a wife to do that."  It was just like the boy to reiterate societies ills aloud as an excuse.  Maddy understood more about Muggles than most people realized
