Welcome to the eighteenth century!

Welcome to DMRP where the year is currently 1795! Life for muggles was very different then, although for wizards it was pretty similar. This thread gives you some of the details that you are invited to use when creating your Character Card and during the game.

It hasn’t been invented yet:

  • Plastic
  • Chewing gum
  • Electricity
  • Cars
  • The planet Neptune (not discovered until 1846)
  • Quidditch goal posts, baskets in use until 1883
  • Gripping charms
  • steam railway invented 1804
  • Wolfsbane potion
  • Germany and Italy, neither was unified until the late 19th century
  • Cushioning charm
New and exciting:
  • The planet Uranus, discovered in 1791
  • United States of America, independence declared 1776, constitution ratified in 1778
  • Australia- Penal colony established 1787-88
  • Pennifold quaffle, invented mid century and much easier to keep in play as it falls slowly
  • The industrial revolution
  • Invention of gas light in 1792
  • Steam engine 1794,

Within Living memory
:

  • Statute of wizarding secrecy 1692
  • Ministry of magic founded 1700
  • Warlock Convention outlaws the breeding of dragons in 1709

Notes of interest:

Q: Due to the steam engine and railway system not having been invented yet.. how exactly are students travelling to Hogwarts?
A: Magic carpet, side along apparition, floo powder or portkey, don’t worry the staff have it under control.

Q: Didn’t girls have to do all the housework back then whilst guys had all the fun?
A: In the muggle world, yes girls were more prompted to learn house work and stuff like embroidery, while boys were more supported into learning academics. We are however, not muggles. If you are, this school is not for you, sorry. From the wizarding history that we do know, wizards seem to have been pretty equal through history and in DMRP boys and girls will have more or less the same opportunities. However, it is always wise to keep your characters background conform 18th century standards.

Q: Weren't clothes different then? What does our Hogwarts Uniform look like?
A: For your uniform: Robes and skirts where appropriate, and cloaks. Pants as you know them most likely weren't in fashion for many years to come. Breeches and stockings were worn by men. Shirts are open necked and made of linen. Students will be issued with a scarf in house colours after arrival.

For your out of school attire, it slightly depends on if your character is male or female, wealthy or poor. In the 18th century, fashion was an important part of life for the rich and wealthy, however, fashion for the poor changed very little. Don't try being too much of a rebel with stereotypical clothing, it doesn't fit the time frame and you will be told off for behavior unbecoming your characters social position.
As a woman, you'd most likely be wearing some sort of bodice for more clothing ideas, look here.
