We know that sometimes it can be hard to decide what spells your character would logically know, and which they wouldn't. Roughly said, there are 4 ways in which your character would be able to perform a charm, hex, curse or transfiguration:

• They were (illegally!!!) taught by their parents before entering Hogwarts or during holidays
  
• They were taught in class by one of the Professors
  
• They learned through self-study from library books or reading ahead in their own school books
  
• An older student or sibling taught a spell

We ask that all our members try to keep this in mind when their character is confronted with a situation in which they might be tempted to perform magic they wouldn't necessarily know how to perform. Keep things real!  So, below you will find a list of spells that first year students know, will know by the end of the year or are allowed to use because it's reasonable to assume they would know them anyway. If there is any spell not on this list that you think should be added, please contact Professor Denman.

List of Approved spells for First years:

- Aparecium
- curse of the bogies
- Diffindo
- Eat Slugs!
- incendio [+ variations]
- levitating
- lumos
- nox
- Patrificus Totalus
- Rictusempra
- scourgify
- stunning (this spell is only known to students who were taught by Professor Hale in their first year.)
- Switching spell
- Tarantallegra
- Wingardium Leviosa

Keep in mind that other students might know other spells than your character does, but if you see someone use a spell you think they couldn't or shouldn't know or use, please alert the staff by pressing the report button.
