Fun
Positive Characteristics:
Cheerful, playful, interested, excited, curious, creative, chatty.
Negative Characteristics:
Impatient, rash, restless, short sighted, insensitive, irresponsible, self involved, unintentionally arrogant. To get his own way he is perfectly content to trample all over people. Do now, apologise later. An Icarus complex of always wanting to fly higher and higher until the sun burns him. Insatiable insensitive thrill seeker. Incredibly ambitious though not usually for anything that seems of any great value to anyone but himself.
Conflict and hardship:
His conflict is all self created. He lives for adventure and fun, ignores warnings, past experience, and the concerns of other people, even his friends. He is self destructive, causing those that care about him grief and making people think he doesn’t respect them, or value their opinion.
Motivation, Passion and Drive:
To die gloriously and heroically. To be famous (or infamous) for achieving something fun and exciting.
Motto or catchphrase:
a mountain of maybes and some Icarus wings
Overall personality:
Montrose is energetic and lively. He has a bubbly cheerful personality but when embroiled on a mission or an hairbrained scheme can become antagonistic towards anyone that tries to prevent him or make him see reason. He is restless about inactivity, disregards curfews, has a huge appetite, and loves to be outside. He is moderately bright but usually falls just below average academically from sheer lack of effort and interest. He is regularly injured but not usually very seriously and bears marks and scars with pride.
Diary Entry:
Montrose Scotlam
the (mis)adventures
A collaboration with Fashion for the purpose of:
-making May scream,
-making father snort wine up his nose and then splutter it out all over the table cloth
-making Derwent leave the room to vomit
-putting mother off dinner
-making self centre of attention for thirty glorious seconds before proving that self is the fastest runner in family and escaping self…
Mission: Exceedingly accomplished. And now for the account.
The hay is fresh in. It smells. There’s one particular stall in the stables where the overflow is being stacked. In the barn, in the roosters are now five owls. Fashion is the most adventurous of course. Five owls and I’ve asked them, well I asked Fashion, and he clearly passed on the message, to leave their pellets in the barn. I came and caught Chaucer coughing one up. Chaucer is May’s owl. And there were a pile of them for me so I fed them all owl treats. I did this after because owl treat pellets are not what I wanted. I wanted ones full of mouse bones, or shrew, or small birds. I cracked one open. Just to check it was full of bones. Poked about a bit. Perfect.
And then I added the rest to the stew… and the first to notice was May but they’d all taken a bite. Actually I did too. Just because I was curious. I had to keep up the pretence. I spat it out after but it didn’t taste so bad. A bit crunchy. I guess the owls ate the best bits.
The Appearance
First Impression:
Generally dishevelled but attired in well fitting clothes that have clearly been tailored at some expense. A live wire. Excitable and harried. A bit incompetent and very hopeless.
On Second thought..:
Darkly cynical sense of humour, incredibly cunning schemer always out to better himself and his exploits. Surprisingly knowledgeable about the castle and its grounds. Softly spoken.
Overall Appearance:
Black wavy hair. Brown eyes. Always starts the day neatly attired in well fitted tailored clothing. Polished shoes and buttons. Of average height and weight and a rather plain face but with the sort of natural default smile that makes him appear friendly. Wouldn’t necessarily stand out in a crowd if he wasn’t so energised and fidgety. Posture is upright and conditioned, chin high, eyes alert.

The Family History
Parentage:
Fenchurch Scotlam. Father of three. Husband of Clemence Montague. A sixty three year old pureblood wizard, graduate of Slytherin house who has made his living somewhat light heartedly exploiting muggles at their own game, the printing press. He is responsible for carving the wood blocks that the Derwent muggles use for their printing press but has commissions from all over the country due to his ability to produce incredibly intricate designs with the aid of magic. His career is somewhat frowned upon by his wife, though tolerated. She is just happy he is working with muggles and not plotting their downfall, no matter how exploitative the relationship.
Clemence Scotlam (nee Montague). Mother of three. Wife of Fenchurch Scotlam. A fifty eight year old pureblood witch, graduate of Gryffindor House who has made her living training winged horses. She apprenticed under Lord Stoddard Withers in care and rearing of winged horses and now works predominantly from home training the young and adolescent horses to carry wizards in flight and draw carriages. She is very pretty and Lord Stoddard often calls her for a consult when trying to sell on the horses.
Siblings:
May Rowsley Scotlam. Eldest child and Daughter of Fenchurch and Clemence Scotlam. A nineteen year old pureblood witch, graduate of Slytherin. Designs corsets and bodices for muggle aristocracy. Calls Montrose, Magpie and ruffles his hair every time she sees him. Lives in London.
Derwent Hannah Scotlam. Daughter of Fenchurch and Clemence Scotlam. A seventeen year old pureblood witch in her 7th and final year at Hogwarts. Proud and poised and Slytherin. Calls her brother Rosie but ignores him if she sees him at school.
Other important figures:
Lord Stoddard Withers. He’s ancient and a lord and pays his mother's salary and is responsible for there being Aethonons in the back yard. Montrose doesn’t see him all that often but thinks he’s incredibly interesting and a marvellous role model. Also Lord Stoddard commissioned the making of Monty’s wand and provided the tail hair of one of the Aethonons for the core.
Reputation:
Various reputations. Among certain purebloods Fenchurch’s exploitation of the muggle printing industry for his own gain is look upon with a rather amused, slightly impressed wry smile. To the local neighbouring muggles who have never been to the house but have seen the family around, the Sctolams seem incredibly eccentric and odd but appear very friendly and unthreatening. Among her peers Clemence Scotlam is a respected and revered trainer to whom many come to for advice.
Secrets:
Clemence had an affair with Lord Stoddard. Fenchurch has had numerous affairs with muggle printing girls. May is being courted by a halfblood. Derwent thinks she might be in love with a girl in her herbology class. Montrose tried to bribe the sorting hat with a ride on an aethonon to be sorted into slytherin.
General:
Nothing right now.
The Wizard Information:
Wand:
Sycamore. Aethonon tail hair core. 11 inches. Inflexible
Pet:
Two year old Barn Owl called ‘Fashion’. Home reared.
Are there any magical items in your house, how about a house elf?
Two house elves, one in charge of the house, one the grounds and stables. Half a herd of flying horses in the bark yard. Also bogarts in the cabinets, doxies in the curtains, gnomes in the garden and glumbumbles in the shrubbery. The whole area is seriously heavily warded.
How strict were your parents in enforcing no underage magic?
Not at all. They have never enforced it. But Montrose is rather incompetent and so it has never been a serious issue.
Are there any spells which are used a lot by your parents?
Yes. Heaps. Both his parents use spells for their work daily. His mother is constantly summoning things from the ground when flying, using cleaning charms and calming charms on the horses. His father cuts wood blocks with spells and apparates and portkeys all over the country to diddle muggles of their money.
Has you character always known they were magical or did they worry they were a squib?
Always known. Didn’t know what a squib was until he already knew he was a wizard.
Does your character have any strong feelings (good or bad) about magic or is it just part of their life?
Just a part of life. A very fun and useful part.
Student Skills:
School Ethic:
Home tutored. If Monty is interested he is an involved, curious, incredibly attentive student. He asks insightful questions, makes copious notes, and remembers the information. If he is bored he stares out of the window, fidgets and begins to cause mischief.
Teacher Relation:
He respects teachers that can teach him something, fears disciplinarian teachers, and mocks incompetent teachers. His opinions are fickle and entirely dependent on teacher, subject, atmosphere and possibly what he ate for breakfast that morning. Has been known to disobey and out right talk back but usually not with out cause.
Work Ethic and Diligence:
He is careless with school property, schoolbooks often remain unread, homework usually gets done if he is terrified of the teacher but may be somewhat slapdash in nature unless it was a particularly interesting topic. His writing is small, scratchy, slightly erratic, but legible. His spelling is atrocious and very phonetic.
Subjects:
Favourite subjects include CoMC, Potions, and DADA. Active classes, exciting classes. Classes where it is possible it could turn into an adventure at any moment, cauldrons could explode, animals could rear up, bogarts could escape their closets.
Least favourite. History and divination and any theory heavy classes. Charms and transfiguration because he is rather poor in this field and gets irritated by his own inadequacy.
Where don't you want to be:
There’s nowhere Montrose Scotlam doesn’t want to be.
