"Not really," said Imogen. "I mean, no one can be sure of what house they'll be placed in. My brother was a Ravenclaw and I, well, I couldn't be too bothered about the houses at the moment. I'm just excited about going." The girl smiled serenely back at Philomena and she returned the smile but with slightly less enthusiasm. Imogen was right, you couldn't know and there wasn't really much point in guessing, but it didn't stop her wanting an answer. The way people thought of themselves had always fascinated her. She would have to think of another tactic to get to know the mysterious girl. "I suppose your right, I can't say i'm not curious about it though, I mean you'll be spending your whole school career in that house, it will affect you massively." Frankly she could not see how the girl wasn't bothered. It made no sense, in her opinion the sorting would be utterly life changing. She had also mentioned her brother being a Ravenclaw, Philomena began pondering this aloud. "Mhm, interesting, maybe you'll be a Ravenclaw too, are you similar? Time will tell I guess. My father was a Ravenclaw but the rest of my family were all Slytherins. Wonder which of those I will be in? It is all very exciting! I can't wait to go." She finished with a friendly smile at both girls, waiting for Liana's response, hoping she would give more away than Imogen had.

"Not yet, starting in September. How about you? Do you know about the Houses, which one do you think you'll be in?"
Houses? Liana was instantly confused. She was sre that if this girl was asking about it, it must be somehow crucial to this new world, but she was lost. She had never heard of any Houses.

"Not really, I mean, no one can be sure of what house they'll be placed in. My brother was a Ravenclaw and I, well, I couldn't be too bothered about the houses at the moment. I'm just excited about going."
A Ravenclaw? The language they were using was growing more and more unfamiliar to her. She thought over the words looking for some sort of clue as to their meaning. It obviously had something to do with the school... But what she wasn't sure.

"I suppose your right, I can't say i'm not curious about it though, I mean you'll be spending your whole school career in that house, it will affect you massively."
As the two girls talked, she grew increasingly confused, as well as slightly panicked. She had read as much as she could find about her new school, but there wasn't much to be read in the muggle world.. She was so new to this world, so unsure of everything.  If the houses were so massively important, she was sure to seem daft if she didn't know what they were.

"Mhm, interesting, maybe you'll be a Ravenclaw too, are you similar? Time will tell I guess. My father was a Ravenclaw but the rest of my family were all Slytherins. Wonder which of those I will be in? It is all very exciting! I can't wait to go."

The more the grls spoke, the more interested Liana became. Soon enough, she just couldn't control herself. Clutching her books to her chest, she spoke a tad nervously to the girls.
"I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? What's a Raven-er-that thing?"

"I'm sorry, but what are you talking about? What's a Raven-er-that thing?"

Imogen gave the girl a curious look, she hadn't replied in kind to her introduction. Didn't matter though of course, she smiled as serenely as she always did, her blue opal eyes glinting with excitement as she explained.

"Ravenclaw. It's a School House, like they have at Eton and the majority of the good Public Schools; their are four at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin."

She smiled, Imogen wouldn't be surprised if both girls were unaware of what Eton was. Her father had studied there, but that was a very long time ago when his family had been rich and he hadn't yet learned to gamble everything away. "Each house has some characteristic, Ravenclaw is known for generally putting importance on intelligence, Hufflepuff on hard work, Slytherin on ambition and Gryffindor on bravery." the girl shrugged. "My brother told me all about it when I got my letter and asked him everything there was to know."

"Ravenclaw. It's a School House, like they have at Eton and the majority of the good Public Schools; their are four at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin." Imogen began explaining to Liana, who had apparently not heard of the houses and was, rightly so, very confused and a little panicked. It must be awful not knowing what you're letting yourself in for, so much catching up on even just the basics to be done. Imogen seemed to have placed a lot of importance on the mentioning of Eton, Philomena had never heard of it, Durmstrang being her only other schooling option. It must be the Muggle equivalent of Hogwarts, she guessed, not bothering to ask further questions about it, no point wasting her time over Muggle schools when they were all bound for Hogwarts. The curious girl continued her explanation to Liana, who would hopefully become less worried now. "Each house has some characteristic, Ravenclaw is known for generally putting importance on intelligence, Hufflepuff on hard work, Slytherin on ambition and Gryffindor on bravery." Philomena nodded her head, smiling warmly at their flustered friend, showing her that Imogen was telling the truth and she was in agreeance.
"Yep, that's about it, put simply of course, all the houses value a few more characteristics and a certain type of person. It's a bit like a personality test of sorts I suppose. Then there is the Sorting Ceremony. All the first years have to come forward and wear the Sorting Hat. The hat sorts you and then you join your house. Then there is the Welcoming Feast, which basically everyone looks forward too, the food at Hogwarts is supposed to be just first class!" Still smiling at both of the girls, she turned now directly towards Liana and with a playful smirk said, "So, any idea what house you would be in now?" Knowing full-well the girl would probably still not have the foggiest idea. Imagine not knowing what house you destined for at all? She thought to herself. Would that be better, no preconceived notions, would it change the outcome of her own sorting? In that moment Philomena promised herself not to ask the hat for any house, to have no favour clear in her head for it to see, she wanted her sorting to be accurate based off herself and herself alone.

"Ravenclaw. It's a School House, like they have at Eton and the majority of the good Public Schools; their are four at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin."

Though Liana had never heard of Eton, there was a small public school not far from her village. She had never attended, and as she had never spoken to the childeren of her village, she had no idea of what went on there. Only that she had always wanted desperately to go there. When  she got her letter from Hogwarts, she was so completely ecstatic that she would have the chance to learn from someone other than her sisters, to be better than them for once.

"Each house has some characteristic, Ravenclaw is known for generally putting importance on intelligence, Hufflepuff on hard work, Slytherin on ambition and Gryffindor on bravery."

She supposed it made sense, but she still didn't quite know where she would belong, where she would fit. How could someone be characterized with one quality?

"Yep, that's about it, put simply of course, all the houses value a few more characteristics and a certain type of person. It's a bit like a personality test of sorts I suppose. Then there is the Welcoming Feast, which basically everyone looks forward too, the food at Hogwarts is supposed to be just first class! So, any idea what house you would be in now?"

As much as she was looking forward to the feast, she was much more anxious about learning what house she'd be in. Was she smart enough to be Ravenclaw? She couldn't even read properly. What about Slytherin? Perhaps she wasn't ambitious enough. She had never proven to be far too loyal or adventurous... She had no idea.

"I have absolutely no idea... I don't really fit into any of those too well.."

She looked over at the two girls and realized that she never introduced herself to the second girl. "Where are my manners? Imogen, I'm Liana."

"Where are my manners? Imogen, I'm Liana."

Imogen smiled at the girl, "It's quite alright," she said waving her hand at the girl's statement about her manners. "It's quite nice to meet you of course,"

"I wouldn't worry too much on which house you'll be in," Imogen said as she looked at the shelf opposite of them. "I think whichever house I end up in, I'll be happy."she said sweetly.

((I reckon i'm going to write Philomena out now, please feel free to continue on though :) ))

"I wouldn't worry too much on which house you'll be in," Imogen said. "I think whichever house I end up in, I'll be happy." Philomena nodded positively at Liana, she hadn't meant to worry the girl, although better to be informed than having the sorting sprung on you a surprise she thought. Imagine, in-front of all your peers, completely clueless, at least the girl knew now, even if she felt she didn't fit in. "Yes, really don't fret over it too much, you'll be fine, the hat will know where to put you, even if you have no idea yourself." She smiled kindly at both girls, thinking of something else to say, perhaps about the lessons? Just as she began, attempting to get the conversation going again, a stunning woman flung the shop door open. Weeping dramatically, getting everyone's attention and most people's sympathy. Not Philomena's. She knew her mother wasn't really upset, the woman had no real emotions towards anything, except maybe a nice pair of shoes. She was incapable of love and if she was truly concerned about her daughter, she would have never been able to get away in the first place. This was all for show, for the crowd's benefit, like everything else the woman did. She shrieked and trilled, her acting skills next to none, you would think she was in actual physical pain. "Excuse me shop-keep, have you seen my daughter, Philomena Fernsby? She's gone missing! She's about 11, long cherry hair up in a bun, deep blue dress? Oh please, someone must have seen her!" Luckily Philomena and her company were well hidden behind many books, so her mother had not seen her yet. Good thing too. If she was caught with Muggleborns her punishment would be vastly worse tonight. Not that she was afraid, of course. She could not bare to have her mother wailing all over the shop for any longer however, it was embarrassing and surely the other girls had heard her name mentioned and would have caught on now. Cheeks briefly flushing with rage and humiliation, she moved away from the girls and towards her mother. "I'm very sorry about this...I have to go now, crept away from my mother ages ago, obviously. Better not keep her waiting any longer, it's been good to meet you both. See you at school!" She managed to keep her true emotions almost perfectly under control, playing up to the mischievous angle, cheekily winking as she went. She had to whisper so she would not be heard by anyone else in the shop, although with her mother's incessant crying, she doubted anyone was paying any attention to her. Heavens, she would wager her mother wouldn't even notice her until she tapped her on the shoulder. She would be right too. Speaking loud and clear above the commotion, Philomena finally made herself known. "Here I am mother, whatever is the matter?" The mock innocence rather convincing and most definitely too insolent for her mum's liking. Never one to break character, her mother composed herself before her anger could be properly observed. "Oh thank goodness, here you are darling! Did you get lost? You silly thing, well come on now. Terribly sorry everyone!" The girl did not appreciate being called silly in front of everyone, but that's what her mother did, constantly undermined her daughter who she inexplicably saw as a threat. She was not left with any time to put on her own show now though as she was dragged out through the door before you could even blink. Oh, Philomena was most definitely in for it now.
