"Oh, you don't have to--"
Alexander was half way down the staircase when he stopped. He had forgotten his quill and ink at the top and seeing that it was his favourite quill, given to him by his cousin he didn't want to lose it.
As he made his way back up the stairs noiselessly, he heard the hurried whispers of Adelaine and Lisette which made him stop in his tracks. He didn't want them to think he was overhearing, he also didn't want them to think he was snooping; yet as hard as he tried to not listen, for moving now back down the stairs would undoubtedly alert them and make them think he was trying to snoop, he stood there rooted.
He heard the unmistakable voice of Adelaine say
"something [...] awful" and the word
"Emmanuelle", could it be, could it have been Adelaine who had cast the hex at her cousin and forced her into the closet all those weeks back. Was her guilty conscience now bothering her about this?
Alexander liked Adelaine, and Emmanuelle as well and yet he felt a horrible sinking feeling as he heard the rapt whisper of Adelaine as she spoke quickly to Lisette. He felt heat rising in his chest and in his cheeks, he was going to be caught and this was not a good place to be.
Straining his ears to block out the sound that came next, he heard Adelaine frantically explain.
"I locked her in a closet" her voice sounded as if it was about to crack under the strain of the confession
"But it was only because of all the horrible things she's done..."
Alexander stood there, and slowly and steadily he tip toed down the stairs to the bottom of the owlery, where he opened and slammed the door. Running his hand over his face, he ensured that his face revealed nothing about the shocking revelation he had just heard. It was shocking yes, but Emmanuelle was undoubtedly cruel and sometimes a hard person. He wasn't certain what side he would choose if he was forced to do so. Undoubtedly Adelaine had made a mistake in what she did, even if Emmanuelle deserved it. Than as loudly as he could, he ran up the stairs cursing and sounding as out of breath as he could muster.
"Merlin's beard..." he said as he entered the top of the Owlery.
"Sorry I forgot..." he crossed to the place he had left his ink and quill, picking them up and stowing them in his bag. As he was about to turn he stopped and looked at Adelaine and Lisette and saw that Adelaine had been crying.
"What's wrong Adelaine?
