Assume the Position!

Rhodri supposed it was better that students learn the basic skills of quidditch in a controlled way with adult supervision. It was a shame though, if there had been one thing at Hogwarts to reinforce his ideas of masculinity and toughness it had been the Gryffindor quidditch sessions. Some of the older members of the house had generously offered to teach the youngsters how to play, and so he had mastered the game through a haze of tears and pain. Gryffindors don't cry! he repeatedly softly under his breath, proud that it was true - at least in his case. He had never cried, not when used as a beater practise target, not when he'd ploughed into the ground, not when ordered to fly through burning goal baskets.
He wouldn't make them do that, not the burning goal baskets. He would expect them to play hard and fair. He would teach them the basics of each position and then they could move on to play for fun or their houses.

"I think I'd do rather well as a Beater," she piped up when he asked what position she had in mind.
Since the moment her father took her to her first Quidditch match, Adelaine had been fascinated by the Beaters. What could be better than speeding around on a broomstick and smacking a ball halfway across the world?

"Oh no! I'm so sorry Adele! I didn't intend for that to happen, I'm such a klutz! I don't even know why I came down here in the first place. I'm just going to mess it up as usual." Meghan frowned and offered Adelaine a hand up. She knew something like this would happen! She was an idiot for coming in the first place. Maybe she could sneak out and spare even more ridicule than she had inflicted upon herself now.

It was as if his feet knew where they were going because next thing he knew, they came to a stop at the Quidditch Stadium. Making his way through the tunnel, he heard voices at the other end. Walking out, he saw Meghan and Adelaine and the Professor already there.
Great he thought at the sight of Adelaine, she was probably going to curse him off his broom. He smiled politely and said, "Hello sir,".
Standing a few feet apart from Meghan, still smiling he said "Hello Meghan," than with a more curt stiff reply "Adelaine"

"Oh, it's alright," she smiled, the tension she had felt melting away at the sight of her friend. "I rather enjoy being beaten with brooms."
She had planned on introducing the Gryffindor to the boy she was talking with, who was now doubled over with laughter, but was soon interrupted. Alexander Sowerby had joined their group, greeting her shortly. Adele decided it was time to 'bury the hatchet', as some say. ((OOC: muahahahaha))
"Alexander, may I talk to you?" she said, not sure why she bothered asking as she took him by the arm and pulled him back to the entrance. "I'm going to be frank, because I'm tired of avoiding someone who is friends with my friends. I find you quite detestable, seeing as you seem to have a problem with butting into other people's business. You had no reason to eavesdrop on Meghan and Em's conversation, nor did you have reason to read my lips when I was planning with my friends."
She paused for a split second in case he wanted to respond in anyway, but jumped back in without really giving him a chance.
"But I've thought that over and decided to pretend that perhaps you just have a staring problem. Anyhow, I'd like to say I'm sorry for being rude to you, because it's clearly given you the wrong impression of me."

Alexander blinked, she found him detestable and even though he had known this all along, it still hurt him like a sharp dagger stabbing him in the abdomen. The idea that someone could dislike him, apart from Luka was a bit odd. Yes, perhaps he had eavesdropped which, was not his intention and had watched Adelaine speaking to Meghan at the dinner table all those weeks ago, but he hadn't done anything directly against the girl. He could feel that his face expressed his crestfallen feeling.
"But I've thought that over and decided to pretend that perhaps you just have a staring problem. Anyhow, I'd like to say I'm sorry for being rude to you, because it's clearly given you the wrong impression of me."
He wasn't sure what to think of this, to be honest he just wanted to go back up to the castle now and sit and brood in his own pity. Yet he stood his ground. He didn't understand any of it. She had attempted to make amends and yet insulted him by calling him detestable and than saying that she had been rude before, yet telling him that she verged on the border of hatred toward him was not?
After a few moments where this whole conversation had time to sink in, "No hard feelings than?" he attempted his bravest smile.

"Uh...right," she said, thinking that maybe he just didn't know how to properly apologize to people. "No hard feelings at all."
Adelaine turned on her heel and walked swiftly back to where Meghan was standing, ready for the headmaster to begin.

"I'm sorry Adelaine." his voice was full of sincerity and it cracked a bit, he looked at her. It was odd, the words coming out of his mouth. Those words rarely ever came out of his mouth, but yet that day on the ice seemed to have changed him.
"For everything," he said uninterrupted. "I've been a bit of a prat and I didn't mean to eavesdrop or overhear you or create any tension, you know." he said, biting his lip nervously. "I don't know," he sighed not sure of what to say or whether he had said too much and had missed the boat with the apology. He felt awkward and eyed the girl cautiously unsure of what she would say next. "I, I ... well, I'm a bit awkward I guess. It's not always intentional you know," he said smiling. He felt stupid saying all this.

"I am, after all, a Clark," she mumbled as she walked into the stadium. She was reassured when she saw some of her classmates. Maybe she wan't hopeless after all...

Putting on a smile, which sadly turned out to be more of a grimace, she wondered if Adelaine was still angry with her. Meghan knew she was often too quick with her words and needed to think before speaking but found it hard to break the habit. Maybe if she kept silent everything would not end in some sort of disaster. Making a vow of silence to herself, at least until being spoken to, Meghan watched as more students arrived.

"I'm very glad to hear that, Alexander," she smiled, speaking low enough for only him to hear; she didn't want Meghan to know there had been any tension. "My temper isn't always intentional, either."
She grabbed a tarnished old school broom off the ground and looked around the pitch. Several more students were arriving now, and Adele silently sized them all up. Some, she felt, had no place whatsoever on a broomstick, let alone the Quidditch pitch.

A great feeling of happiness spread through him, for the first time since before the Hogsmeade trip he felt comfortable and content. Whatever happened, happened and it was in the past. Like Adelaine who turned back to the teacher, he did as well waiting for instruction and the lesson to start.

Though Alistair hadn’t had much time to practice on the broom, he was desperately fond of it. He had even decided to name it, though he didn’t yet have a name picked out. He was fairly certain it should be a boy’s name, as he was worried about the implications associated with someone overhearing him keeping a girl hidden underneath his bed. That just wouldn’t do.
He made his way out to the pitch in no time at all, happy to have a reason other than class to go outside in the chilly weather. Alistair didn’t mind the cold so long as he didn’t feel wet, like in the rain. Snow, until you trudged it inside, wasn’t wet. In fact, it was sort of pretty. It seemed to decorate the turrets of the castle and the high seating areas of the quidditch pitch.
Alistair strolled into the pitch and was pleased to find so many different students there. He wasn’t the only hufflepuff either; there were older students that were actually on the house team somewhat separated from the group. Everyone was chatting, so Alistair could only assume they hadn’t started yet. He wandered over to a Slytherin he had met over the summer. “You’re Orion, right? I met you at Allison’s ball in July.” He chose Orion because he was a boy. Alistair was still unsure about how he felt when it came to girls playing quidditch. He’d seen it, but it still seemed strange to him. He didn’t want to say anything stupid to the girls gathered here though. "Which position do you play?

When Genevieve got there she saw a scattering of students, many first and second years, although she didn't see her sister. She was a little surprised, she would never have expected Cecile not to show up to this unless she was off causing trouble somewhere else. That was also very probable.
"Hello Alistair," she called catching sight of the Hufflepuff. He was with Orion Baines, one of Cecile's friend. "Hello Orion," she added as she got closer to them. "Are you two thinking of trying out? If they ever decide to hold them." All of the teams had been full for ages, it was time for some new blood if you asked Vieve.

She'd been working towards tryouts all year, flying whenever she could. She even practiced during the holidays with Emmanuelle. Quidditch was the only release she had unless she wanted to turn out like Em. She'd never really imagined how she would feel if she were to fail.
"Are either of you planning on trying out for your house teams?" she questioned the two with a sudden air of timidness. "You know, when the time comes?"

"As i'm sure you all know quidditch is played with three balls - the snitch which the seeker catches, the bludgers which the beaters hit, and the quaffle which is passed between the chasers who try and get it into the goal baskets. Which the keeper is responsible for stopping. I wnat all of you to get a feel for every position, so we'll start with some basic quaffle handling. Form a circle about twenty feet above the ground in the centre of the pitch"

Hearing the Professor begin the lesson, Meghan strained to her over all the chatter. As the conversations died out and she could hear him, Meghan grinned at the mention of flying. She had spent as much time as possible practicing, and she could proudly say she was rather good. Unlike walking, Meghan actually had some resemblance of grace when in the air. Her mother had been bewildered about it more so than she!
Looking at her friends, grin still in place, she said, "No offense Alexander, but I for one cannot wait to knock some Slytherin's down a notch, literally!"

"I'll just be glad to knock Emmy down a knotch," she laughed in an attempt to clear her mind once again.
She had no doubt the Slytherin would make the team; she and Em both had been flying and playing Quidditch for as long as she could remember. It seemed to be the only thing they had in common. Hearing the headmaster speak, Adele snapped out of her daze. Following his instruction, she mounted her broom and kicked off. Rising 20 feet into the air, give or take 3 three feet, she waited for her friends to join her.

Alexander grinned in spite of himself, thinking fleetingly of the moment he put on the Sorting Hat and the fact that it had offered him the choice between Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Than, still wanting to make his parents proud and supportive of him; he chose Slytherin but how often he regretted that choice.
"No, I suppose you wouldn't." he winked at the girl. Looking around to make sure that no other Slytherin heard him saying that, not especially Emmanuelle.
