Ginger snaps

Yawning, he absent-mindedly picked up a ginger snap from a small box which lay right beside him. The sweets reminded him of his sister. He wondered what she was doing now. Closing his eyes, he yawned slightly covering his mouth all the while with his hand. He squinted and blinked a few times, wiping his watery eyes from the remnants of a yawn. Just as he had done so he heard a sound behind the door of the dormitory.

"Mon dieu," she muttered, in a daze.
Hopping out of her four-poster, she threw on her cloak and wrapped it tightly around her. The dreadfully chilly walk to the common room would be the only way to better the situation. On her way to the door, she tripped over a girl's open trunk, holding back the urge to bewitch the thing to never unlock again.
Quietly, she opened the door and headed swiftly to the fire. Cozying up in the chair nearest to the flames, she looked around the room and realized she wasn't alone. How had she not noticed Alexander Sowerby sitting there? Magnifique, she thought grimly.
"Ah, 'allo Alexander," she smiled. "You are doing well today, I 'ope?"

None the less did not say a thing and the girl seemed to ignore him as she sat down in the closest chair to the fire. Alexander quietly chewed the ginger snap he had bitten on, watching her without any real interest. Just than she seemed to realise that he was there, putting on a rather fake smile and sweet voice she spoke.
"Ah, 'allo Alexander," the girl said, he replied trying to keep any stiffness from his voice "Good morning Emmanuelle,". "You are doing well today, I 'ope?". Alexander wanted to smirk since he knew that the girl cared little about what anyone felt, but thought better. After all another six years would have to be spent in the company of these fellow Slytherin's.
"Yes," he said politely but rather shortly. "How are you?" he asked the girl back. "Care for a Ginger Snap? My sister made them and sent them to me," he said pointing absent mindedly at the box of cookies.

"Er, no, merci," she responded curtly. "I try to avoid geenger."
With another look at Alexander, she noted that his countenance was rather stiff, which didn't surprise her. After all, he had apparently heard every word she and Meghan said in Honeyduke's. That was quite unfortunate, but if he took it the wrong way, that wasn't her problem. It's not as if they said anything against him.
"I 'ave been wanting to speak with you about ze 'ogsmeade trip," she announced, leaning in a bit closer so the few Slytherins just arriving wouldn't hear. She bit back the urge to call him a lowly eavesdropper. "My couzeen says zat you 'eard our conversation?"

Alexander felt a pang of annoyance at this, although his face showed no sign of this. What annoyed him however was that he had been nice enough to offer her something and she refused; especially after he felt that she used him as a target of her mind-games. For a millisecond he felt like standing up, and throwing the box of ginger snaps right at her, however that would be a great waste he thought savagely. Pulling her hair or calling her a rude name would be just as childish and just as unbecoming of a gentleman of his parentage. Alexander always controlled his emotions, there was no point of becoming a deranged child unwilling to diplomatically solve this problem. It was expected of all Sowerby children to not act like children, let alone to show emotions to anyone; it was unclean and improper to be showing anything which would be classified as common.
Just as he felt the urge to stand up and make an excuse to leave the girl spoke leaning so that they would be harder to be overheard.
"I 'ave been wanting to speak with you about ze 'ogsmeade trip,"
His expression did not change from the bored one he had worn although he knew that she was attempting to reconcile their difference or perhaps this was yet another mind-game. He couldn't be certain, he knew however that this girl wanted to be seen as popular around the school and for this she needed as many people to 'like' her; Alexander however wasn't going to give her that benefit, not until she apologized or had been fully honest with him.
"My couzeen says zat you 'eard our conversation?"
The boy considered what to say next, he wasn't really sure but the first thing that floated into his mind was that he couldn't bother with Adelaine either. She seemed to be a rat and would tell her precious cousin everything, perhaps even about the book she had seen him with at the Quad in October, which he had since returned to the Forbidden Section.
Knowing full well that there was no point of denying the fact he had overheard her and Meghan, he knew that there was hardly a point of explaining himself. Doubt crept in as to whether this girl would believe him anyway, feeling it was more of a fact that she wanted to make him out to be a villain rather than to understand him.
"Yes, I did." he said shortly without elaborating. So what if I did? Why does she care? he thought as he looked at the girl, his expression of mild interest showing no concern on his face.
There was no point to this conversation, he would undoubtedly be painted as an eavesdropper and as unpleasant; even though the only reason why he overheard the conversation was because he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time and all he wanted to do when he walked up to the corner they had hid themselves in was to hopefully solve the Mexican stand-off which was tearing a cleave between their group in Hogsmeade. Although this was the reason, he doubted that this hot headed French girl would believe. Undoubtedly she felt herself to be of such importance that people would stand in line to overhear whatever she had to say.

Emmanuelle glanced awkwardly around the room and twiddled her fingers. She really had no idea what to say to such a short sentence. Of course, it was obvious the boy didn't want to be having this conversation, nor any conversation with her for that matter. Being proud and French, though, she forged ahead.
"Well, per'aps you 'ave taken eet ze wrong way," she suggested, not actually knowing how much he had heard that day. "I only said zat...We were only saying zat we would not try to er...."
C'est ridicule, she thought, ready to get up and walk away. He seemed to be perfectly cordial with Meghan since the incident; she said exactly the same thing Em did, how come he wasn't upset with her too? Anglais imbéciles.
"See, we were both trying to ween you over, and so eet was like a competeeshun, but it eezn't as eef we did anything wrong to you," she blurted out rather quickly. But she was right, it was between her and Meghan, not her and Meghan and Alexander.

He watched her as she spoke, listening to whatever she had to say. He was going to let her explain, he felt that he deserved to know the truth even if she painted him as a villain for overhearing snippets of information. Either way, the girl was cruel and he wasn't all that certain he would want to be friends with her even if she had a good enough explanation.
"Well, per'aps you 'ave taken eet ze wrong way," the girl spoke as Alexander cocked his eyebrow. I wonder what she thinks I ought to have thought. he thought as she stumbled with her explanation awkwardly. "I only said zat...We were only saying zat we would not try to er....". However before he could even speak, as he tried to by opening his mouth the girl kept on, as if she felt a need to express her feelings. Alexander thought that she probably felt annoyed with him for not having gotten in on the joke, he didn't suppose the girl understood why he took it to heart and was now not speaking to her.
"See, we were both trying to ween you over, and so eet was like a competeeshun, but it eezn't as eef we did anything wrong to you," the girl blustered on finishing somewhat awkwardly at the end.
"What do you reckon I should have thought." Alexander spoke in a calm voice but he thought that perhaps anyone listening could denote a slight hint of sadness. He didn't meet her gaze, looking off to the side. "I may have misconstrued whatever intention yourself and Meghan had, but one way or another you used me." he closed the box of ginger snaps bringing it into his lap. "You made me an object, a trophy. To be sought and won over by whatever means necessary. So you were nice to me, you tried to 'win' me over by taking an interest in me and when you got bored of the whole charade you forgot about me." he said truthfully and honestly, the note of sadness gone in his voice.
"Perhaps that's the way it is in France, or it's the way it is everywhere and I've never looked properly, however, I wanted to be friends with you, your cousin and Meghan but I feel that you're not who you make yourselves out to be. You used me once to get back at someone else, what makes you think that explaining this would somehow make me forget the whole situation and accept everything at face value." Alexander spoke sincerely. He wanted to tell the girl how cruel, facetious and conceited she was but he stopped himself not wanting to start a Cold War between himself and this girl. "I doubt you care to be friends, it took you long enough to speak to me in the first place." he said with a wry expression on his face. Picking up the box, he stood up his voice sounding higher than usual. "I don't want to be used nor manipulated, for whatever reason. One day, you'll understand when you become an inside joke you're not privy to."
He looked at her and feeling a lump forming in his throat he turned around. He felt his eyes water but he strode over slowly toward the entrance, half hoping she'd stop him. He fought back the watery eyes and cleared his throat heartily as he thought about the fresh air which would do him well.

"I will not waste time trying to get eet through to you zat you are not a trophy," she scoffed, taken aback. "You are, 'owever, much more egotistical zen I thought."
She decided it best not to say that Armands never go after anyone, Armands are the ones who are sought after. Em was a bit conceited herself, but she would never assume as much as him. Truthfully, she had liked him, and she was impressed by him. Meghan wanting him as well only made it better, but he was never an 'object' to either of them.
"And, pardon, but what does Adelaine 'ave to do with anything? She 'as never spoken a word against you, she eez ze one who told me to apologize to you in ze first place!"
The boy had gotten up to leave, and she had no intention of stopping him. In fact, she hopped up, beat him to the door, and hurried out of the common room, slamming the door behind her.

The boy stood transfixed, clutching the box of ginger snaps in his hand. He watched as she glowered at him. Not saying a single thing, she burst out once more.
"And, pardon, but what does Adelaine 'ave to do with anything? She 'as never spoken a word against you, she eez ze one who told me to apologize to you in ze first place!"
Alexander stood perplexed as Emmanuelle beat him to the door and slammed it as she left. He wasn't sure whether this was one of those times that he was suppose to give chase or just stay and let her blow off her steam. He decided on the latter, whatever was going to happen; he knew that this couldn't get any worse.
He clambered through the door way and rounded a corner, running after the girl.
"I'm really sorr- ..." he couldn't bring himself to say sorry but he yelled after her none the less.
"Just hold on, let me explain ..."

"EMMANUELLE ..." he shouted once more.
However the girl had vanished. She was quite fast and that surprised Alexander who had expected to catch up with her just outside of the Common Room in the dark dungeon. He regretted his attitude very much, he had not been usually stand-offish. Alexander hadn't realise that Emmanuelle wasn't quite what he thought she was. Well, perhaps she was just acting. He thought as he looked down at the ground.
Returning to the common room, he'd put the box of ginger snaps back in his dormitory and would prowl into the school. Perhaps he'd find her and would try to make sense of everything that had been said and she had meant.
