Adelaine walked slowly into the half empty Great Hall, books in hand. She found that this was the best place for studying. The library was somehow too quiet for her, making it impossible to concentrate. Today, though, she wasn’t really planning on studying - she was people watching; “observing”, as she liked to call it. Observing was one of Adele’s favorite things to do when she didn’t feel like doing schoolwork. People’s odd behaviors fascinated her, and this was the best place to do it. She sat down to a table and pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill and began to write.

Dearest Mother,
All is well here. Classes are wrapping up soon, which ultimately means work is getting harder. Tell father I’m studying everyday and keeping all my grades up. I hope to see you both at Christmastime.
Adelaine

Truth be told, Adele’s parents hadn’t been writing her and, therefore, hadn’t invited her home for Christmas. They were still wary of her House placement. But she hoped they’d soon get past it, and perhaps they had written to her. Maybe the letters just hadn’t gotten to her. She folded the letter up and set it aside, pulling out her History of Magic book. Flipping to a random page, she pretended to read.

Not far away, a small red-head girl was crawling quietly along under the long forms. Dust already blackened her  hands and knees. Under her breath, she muttered crossly to herself in Irish Gaelic. Exploding Snap cards were scattered far and wide, and she had to find them all. The game was no fun if cards were missing.

Collecting a few more cards from under a bench, she spotted one that had gotten stuck down a crack in the flagstones. She tried to pry it out with her fingertips, but it just slipped further in. "A plague on Slytherins and all their works!" she exclaimed, sitting up in disgust and banging her head on the table. "Ow!"

It was quite quiet in the Great Hall, and Lisette hoped she would be able to get some reading done - not studying, of course, but just a little light reading to ease her mind and maybe a board game or two. She glanced jealously at two Hufflepuffs that were giggling as they played a game of wizard's chess, and wondered maybe if she should put that book down before she'd even started. Well then, who would she play with?

Lisette caught sight of the blonde-haired Adele. With a smile and a wave she started to make her way over (the poor girl seemed to be needing some company, stuck with a super-heavy textbook) but then she heard a rather rude comment sprinkled with an Irish accent about a plague on Slytherin. Instantly she snapped to attention. How dare she insult Slytherins! No house deserved to be outcasted. She turned to see that the culprit was Aisling (Lisette had correctly remembered the girl's name this time) the first-year Gryffindor who so wanted to fly. Rather than feel pity for the girl, though, Lisette immediately thought of a few very colourful swears to use. "What did you just say?" She settled for, in an icy undertone.

Adele waved back at Lisette, who seemed to have been walking over to her when she stopped suddenly and turned to a first year. She looked a bit upset at first by what the Gryffindor had said. Adelaine decided to investigate, so she stood up and walked over to the two girls. She left her books back at her seat, but she figured no one would steal them. Recently, there had been some theft at Hogwarts.
"Hello, Lisette," she smiled. She turned and smiled at the first year. "What's going on here?"
She hoped she wasn't intruding, but it was a very slow day in the people-watching business and she had no interest in actually studying.

Rubbing her head, Aisling crawled out from under the benches and came face to knees with a person who icily enquired what she had said. Looking up from hands and knees, Aisling recognized Lisette and groaned. Obviously the older girl had taken her comment personally - and of course she would, being a Slytherin herself. Aisling had not meant to insult Lisette, but now that she had inadvertantly done so, she wasn't backing down.

She stood up and dusted off her knees before glaring back at the other girl, tilting her chin defiantly.
"I said, a plague on the works of Slytherins!" she repeated recklessly, though inwardly she was more than a little nervous about insulting an older student to their face. Hoping to face off an attack she brandished her handful of Exploding Snap cards. "See what yer beloved housemates did? These cards are everywhere and stuck in the flagstones. Now I cannot get them out." she scowled.

She turned when another voice, much more pleasant than Lisette's icy tone, spoke to them. She did not know this student but could tell from the blue trimming that she was looking at a Ravenclaw, "Some Slytherin boys kicked me bag about and all me cards got scattered." she told the girl ruefully. "To be sure, 'tis no fun playing Snap with half the cards lost."

Adelaine smiled at the upset little girl. She somewhat admired her for holding her ground up against Lisette, though Lisette wasn't exactly the poster-child for Slytherin house. In fact, she was the only truly nice Slytherin she'd ever met. But either way, the first year had nerve. "Ah, they were only having a bit of fun. No matter how crude it was," she decided to say. Getting in the middle of other people's arguments wasn't exactly Adele's idea of fun, but today she was in such a strange mood. It was like she was just looking for trouble.
"It isn't just Slytherins, though," she assured her, since Lisette's manner was a bit more Slytherin-esque than normal. "Just the other day two fourth years stole a book of mine. Hufflepuff's, if you can believe that!"
Adele looked around at the mess and pulled out her wand. "Accio Snap cards," she chanted. Within seconds, every card laid neatly in her left hand. She smiled and handed them to the Gryffindor. "Handy spell to know."

((OOC: That would be nice, but Accio is apparently a fourth-year spell.Should we continue?))

Lisette felt rage bubble through her. Aisling was continuing to be brave and Gryffindor-like as she ranted on about a bunch of boys who messed up her cards. She felt jealousy too, as Aisling seemed to take a much friendlier tone with Adele who was a Ravenclaw. Lisette bit back a stinging comment and instead sighed as Adele kindly offered to patch up the conversation.

Her eyes widened as Adele, with a bit of fancy spell-work, successfully conjured a spell two grades ahead of her. This girl was definitely clever, and she wondered if she'd had any other training beforehand. Lisette made a mental note not to get on Adele's bad side - who knew if she had any dangerous spells up her sleeve?
"Very impressive." She mused.

Meghan walked into the Great Hall with hopes of finding Alexander. Instead she came upon a slight ruckus. It seemed someone in her house had experienced the wrong side of a prank. Meghan calmly approached the group with dignity. That is until she bumped into someone.

Not this one again. Why couldn't she have bumped into her lovely Alexander. He was so handsome... Ah... No time to fawn over him. She needed to bypass this person and get on to the ruckus. "Pardon me." Meghan said so in a polite manner and hurried towards the three girls. "Now what seems to be the issue here? I apologize but I cannot seem the remember everyone's names. Care to fill me in? I'm Meghan Morris."

Adele was just about to respond to Lisette about her spell when another Gryffindor appeared and introduced herself. "Hello, Meghan," she said politely. "Well," she paused and took a deep breath, "apparantly, a few Slytherin boys interrupted this girl's game of Exploding Snap cards and caused some sort of ruckus, which then caused her to throw out a rather rude comment about Slytherins, which then caused Lisette to stop and question her, therefore causing her to retort, ultimately causing me to walk over and try to calm everyone down."
Adelaine caught her breath and smiled. "Really I think it was all just a big misunderstanding."

For once, Luka had not been watching where he was going.
Normally, the was no way in a thousand years that he would yet someone as brainless as Meghan Morris bump into him...
But he had been holding in his hands a scrap of paper covered in spikey, smudged writing and had been trying to figure what on earth it could say...
And she bumped him.

Luka raised his eyebrows at her polite tone, opened his mouth to make some cutting comment...
But she was gone.
Luka followed with his eyes as she hurried over to a group of girls. He frowned.
Aisling Keane, facing up to Slytherin green... If his small friend was going to get into a fight, he wanted to be part of it. He moved after Meghan Morris, smooth as a shadow.
Just in time to hear her say she could not remember people's names.
Well, and why did that not suprise him? He gave a soft laugh.
"Can't find their names in your empty head? Allow me to assist..."
He eyed the group with eyes as cold as emeralds.
"Lisette Heartstone, afraid of knives and allergic to cats, rubbish at spells," he began. "Then we have Adelaine Beaumont, house-mate mine who likes to listen in on others conversations," thinking back to when she had watched him and Cat in the common room. "And last of all... Aisling Keane, the bravest of the brave." For Aisling was one of the few people he could actually call a friend.

"There was no need to be rude. I know Adelaine, but I have yet to have the pleasure to converse with Aisling or Lisette." Meghan said this stiffly for she did not want to lose her temper once again. Why he found pleasure in teasing her was a mystery. Did he like to be yelled at? What an odd boy.

Meghan could not help but chuckle at his high opinion of her house mate. So it wasn't all Gryffindors he despised, only her. Well didn't that just make her day. (OOC: That was sarcasm!) If only he could be more like her beloved Alexander...

Meghan was glad that there was no real damage done with Aisling but a bit irked to find she was so prejudiced. Alexander was in Slytherin! "Glad to see you all managed to fix this without use of wands." she said this pointedly to Luka. If he hadn't been so incorrigible she may have not resorted to such tactics.

Adelaine stared grimly at Luka. The boy had been nothing but trouble since he came to Hogwarts, and as far as she could tell, it's all he'd ever be. She was astonished that he would bring up the night in the common room she'd been listening to a conversation between he and Cat.
"In my defense, Luka, one couldn't help but overhear the conversation. You were stealing his shoelaces, for heaven's sake!"
He had made it seem so much worse. As if she were nothing more than a sly little eavesdropper, like she had nothing better to do with her time. Remembering that night and him trying to steal Cat's shoelaces, she looked quickly back to her books at the table. She really shouldn't have left them there, but felt that she couldn't go get them now. Not now that she was in the middle of this, along with having just been insulted.
She turned hastily back to Meghan, trying to resume her cheerful manner. "Well, I wouldn't put wand use totally out of the question," she said, still glaring at Luka. With an attitude like that, he should be in Slytherin, she thought with a sigh. Then again, so should she..

((OOC: Whoaaa...got a little left behind!! Sorry if I cannot respond to everything y'all said!!))

Aisling's scowl was magically transformed into a beaming smile as all her scattered cards whizzed into her hand. What was that spell? Akkyo, or something. She had not heard it before, but it was obviously a very useful one. She would have to try it out sometime - in a secluded corner, where the explosions she invariably made when trying out a new spell would not attract too much unfavorable attention!

Carefully shuffling the cards together into their case - you had to be careful when putting Exploding Snap cards together - she put them into her rather scuffled bag and looked up as two more people arrived on the scene. Luka she already knew, they had had several adventures together already and though the tall boy antagonized most people, they somehow got along rather well. Meghan she had seen in classes and around the Gryffindor common room, but they had not really met yet. Adelaine summed up the situation and Aisling reddened to hear her comment described as rude.

"Well, 'twasnt much fun from where I'm standing," she retorted in response to Adelaine's comment that they had only been having a bit of fun. "An' I was NOT rude! They started it! They took my stuff an' just threw it all-where!" she protested, tossing her head crossly. Of course she had been rude, even if it wasn't specifically aimed at Lisette, but she wasn't about to admit it.

While everyone seemed to be trading insults, Aisling stepped back and tried to count up to ten in her head, like her mam told her to do when she got angry. She bit her lip and watched the others. Had she really caused all this to-do? Maybe she ought to apologize to Lisette, though she squirmed at the idea of admitting she was wrong. For now she watched to see what would happen next. Maybe they'd all just forget about her.

The great hall. A place to bring all the houses and students together. Unity, peace. Everyone could eat, study and play together, how pleasant. Well Amelia assumed this is what the school was aiming for but in fact the great hall seemed to be the place for students to bad mouth each other and instigate arguments before being ushered to their separate common rooms. Amelia loved a bit of drama and as she was innocently reading her book she couldn't help but notice the crowd that was gathering and the voices that were being raised. Amelia watched the group for awhile, noting that it was quite a diverse bunch, Lisette from Slytherin, Adele being from Ravenclaw, another Ravenclaw and two Gryffindors thrown in for good measure. They hardly looked a happy bunch. Amelia smirked, typical Hufflepuff's, staying out of trouble. Amelia strode over to the group, shaking her head with mirth. "Looks like you're missing a Slytherin." Amelia joked. "What's going on then? Hello Lisette, Hello Adele, long time no see, glad to see you're well..."Amelia said, whilst scanning the whole situation with a slight smirk playing on her lips, she waited for more drama to unfold, hopefully. Well it beats the dreary story I was reading anyways, Amelia thought to herself.

Luka was quite pleased with the effect his comments caused. Adelain Beaumont gazed at him with astonishment, claiming that she could not help but hear. Saying it as if stealing someone's bootlaces was a strange thing to do.
He shrugged, gave her an aggrivating smile that seemed to say 'defend yourself all you like. But that's who you are in my mind.'

And Meghan was being quite stuffy, keeping her temper under control. Luka eyed he thoughtfully. He knew he could make her fly off the handle if he chose... but perhaps here and now was not the smartest time to do so. There were so many people about and besides, Aisling might not like it if he attacked her house-mate.
Even if she does deserve it.
He watched Aisling pack her cards away. Then she said that 'they' had taken her stuff and threw it 'all-where.' Luka's eyes grew suddenly sharp. Who had dared...!
"Who took your stuff, Aisling?" he asked. He knew that his spit-fire friend could pretty much take care of herself, but that was not the point. Back in London, if someone 'got' your friend then you 'got' them twice over.
Someone was going to have to pay for what they had done.
Luka hardly glanced up when another girl joined them. He had been up for a good argument but now he had something more important to think about.

Alexander walked into the hall, looking up at the enchanted ceiling he saw that it was a relatively nice morning, some cloud cover, sunny but not overcast. He was still a bit groggy, he had gone to bed a tad late staying up to finish his History of Magic essay. Alexander never liked to do homework on the weekend if it was possible, so he tended to stay up late on Friday night sitting in the Common Room in front of the fire, as long as it took him to get the work done. He knew he couldn't count on himself being able to always finish before the weekend started but it was the beginning of the year still. The teachers haven't gone mental yet; as his sister Julia and his cousin Rowena often told him about the school year and how quickly the workload went from keeping a student busy to serious sleepless nights.

However, this strategy of doing homework as soon as possible and getting it done a few days ahead (handing it in when it was done, after obvious revision and review) was hopefully going to keep him ahead of the game. This way he could focus the rest of the weekend on spending it outside, reviewing his lesson plans and perhaps even getting some practice to learn new spells and review potion ingredients.

He was glad it was the weekend, at least there would be no rush to get to class while the weather was this nice. He thought about stealing himself for a walk around the grounds.

Thinking about this as he mindlessly sat down at the Slytherin table, he grabbed a plate of bacon, dishing it out onto his own plate; taking two hard boiled eggs and pouring himself some pumpkin juice, when he noticed a bunch of fellow Slytherin's talking to some Gryffindor and Ravenclaw students.

That's a bit odd he thought as he watched them nonchalantly. Usually house mates didn't have much inter house interaction. Although he didn't blame the idea. Some things were better if they stayed the same.

Picking up a napkin, he placed it on his lap. Bringing the plate closer to him, he began to eat his bacon and eggs.

Lisette rolled her eyes as Luka joined the conversation and made a few snaky comments about everyone except for Aisling. Meghan, who had politely greeted everyone only a few moments before was also on the receiving end and it was really terribly unfair. She had nothing to do with this and yet Luka was delighting in calling her empty-headed. Lisette felt herself reddening with rage, desperately trying to stop herself from losing her temper. Luka had no brains at all, she thought furiously, and didn't deserve to be a Ravenclaw and on the same par as Adele, who had been nothing but kind (from what she'd heard).

It just wasn't fair.

Lisette was seriously about to lash out but stopped as she saw the movement of yet another Slytherin (Amelia had arrived before, but she'd been too lost in her thoughts to register her presence). Alexander Sowerby. She remembered that Meghan had hinted at a slight fondness for this particular boy, and smirked. Hopefully there would be some drama unfolding.
"Hello," she waved, hinting to Meghan that maybe now would be a good chance to talk to him. After all, Meghan had admitted that she really hadn't met him at all.

Finishing his plate of bacon and eggs, Alexander pushed the plate away. Wiping the corners of his mouth, he placed the napkin on the side of the dish and the cutlery on the dish itself. Smiling to himself, he asked a surly fifth year boy beside him, if he could pass him the teapot which he did.

Pouring himself a cup of tea, Alexander saw a Slytherin girl waving at him. He smiled back and nodded, not being one to generally wave, especially not from such a distance, as it was a commoner type of thing to do.

Placing two sugar cubes into his tea he stirred rather silently as he looked up at the ceiling again.

Aisling glanced up at Luka when he asked who had taken her stuff, and blinked. The boy suddenly looked rather menacing.

"Oh...um...that is..." she stammered, a little taken aback. She did NOT want to admit that it had been her own cousin that had started it. Sure, Fionn was a bully, but she wasn't going to air the family's dirty laundry in front of everyone. "Just some stupid boys really...I guess Adelaine is right...they were just having a bit of fun." She backtracked, eyeing Luka, wondering what he was thinking. The tall boy had more enemies than friends around here, but she had already experienced that he was fiercely protective of his few friends, and since learning that he carried knives, she wasn't sure she could entirely trust him not to use them!

She glanced around the large group that had gathered. There were several students here that she hadn't met, and she wondered if some were second or third years. At least she knew Lisette was. She sidled over to the older girl and tried to catch her eye.
"Um...Lisette...I didn't really mean what I said just now about Slytherins. I was just mad at some boys who happened to be Slytherins!" she said, hoping the girl would accept what was about as close as she was going to get to an apology.
