Rhodri LLwellyn smiled benevolently over the great hall. It was the first day of the new school year and the older students had begun to arrive for the feast. Of course the feast would follow the sorting, and the sorting itself could not yet take place. Somewhere outside in the dusk, the first yeasr were making their way across the lake under the 'tender' guidance of Mortimer Ogren. Which was unfortunate for the first years, but at least kept Ogren's odious body away from the Great Hall for a while longer.
The professor idly scrawled a few last minute notes for his speech onto a scrap of parchment. He never made long speeches of course, and that made it all the more essential to make sure he'd packed all the details in. He also kept half an eye on the students who were starting to file into the hall.

As he took a seat, he looked around at the familiar room. People were arriving, he looked to see if anyone he recognised was among the crowd streaming through the doors. It was good to be back here again, in magical surroundings. He wondered what the sorting hat's speech would be this year, it always seemed to say something new and exciting but of course it was not the speech itself that was the most important part of the evening for him, nor would be the feast itself that his stomach was clearly looking forward to. No, this was the day when he would find out which house Mary would be sorted into. With any luck she might join him at this very table. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Ellenore headed over to the Slytherin table and took a seat on the end. She watched the other students file into the Great Hall and waited for the year to start.
Just a little good inside this heart

"Oi! Peter!" he called. "How have you been?" Truly, this would be a remarkable year. The fun had just begun.

Hardly anyone was there yet. She parted from Genevieve at the front door and skipped to the Hufflepuff table. "Hi Joe!" she called taking a seat across from the older boy. "How was your summer? Are you excited to be back? I hope they start soon!" You would think she hadn't been outside running her mouth to everyone she had come across all day the way she was chattering on, but that was Cecile for you. She never missed an opportunity to talk, it was one of her favorite things to do. That wasn't to say she didn't listen too, but at least with her you didn't have to worry about awkward lags in the conversation.

Whereas Cecile skipped off, Genevieve more meandered towards the Gryffindor table. It was nice to be back, Hogwarts felt more like home than home did, now a days and Gryffindor was the center of her Hogwarts home. She just wasn't about to mention that. If anyone asked she would still tell them she was left afloat in a sea of idiots, which in some ways she was, but she was rather fond of them now.
"Hullo Regis," she said plopping down at the table near the second year. She didn't know him well, but she knew her own yearmates in her house even less, so he seemed a good person to talk to. "How was your summer?"

"Hello Cecile" he remarked initally "I had a great summer. My sister discovered that she was in fact a witch, in fact Mary is among the crowd waiting to be sorted." He couldn't recall if he had told Cecile about Mary at all, but if not then now would be a good time to talk about her, when she was on the verge of taking her place among the ranks of Hogwarts students.
He smiled at Allison when she joined them too. "Hi Allison" he replied "I can't wait for the sorting, and yes I had a wonderful summer. Thanks once again for inviting me over, you have a very interesting house." He recalled the Summer Ball that her family had hosted, and all-in-all he had a good time. He was of course grateful that he hadn't been obliged to dance though.

Regis greatly hoped that Genevieve didn't think he was an idiot. Regis, for some reason, really wanted to impress Genevieve, which is why he slipped in the bit about professional quidditch.

Even so, he was still only a second year and in Slytherin that meant he had to sit nearer the teachers - only the older kids got the fun seats nearer the door. Still, at least he knew he'd find somebody to talk to. Like Ellenore for instance. "Hey again El" he greeted her cheerfully. "I wonder how long we have to wait for the sorting?"

No first years were forthcoming but she did see Allison who came over and joined her. "It was good, just boring. Except for the ball and the zoo," she brightened a little. "Thank you again for inviting us, I had a wonderful time." Even though Finn McGill hadn't crashed the party and whisked her away to life of pirating. She would have to keep looking. "I'd never been in a real wizarding house before," she added. "I'd like to get a proper look around one someday." Her own house was big, practically as big as Allison's, but except for whatever Cecile and her sister brought home completely Muggle.

"Greetings Rhodri" he spoke to the headmaster as he sat down, then watched the hall filling up with yet more students. He knew it wouldn't be long before everybody was seated and the official business of the evening could begin. The Great Hall was truly vast but it seemed to take no more than a few minutes to populate the place.
He too was looking forward to the sorting of course, to seeing yet another batch of new students discovering which house they will call their home for what would hopefully be the next seven years. It was always a major event in the Hogwarts calendar of course, and so it should be. The sorting defined in a number of cases the course of these young people's lives.

She was moving quite slowly toward the table, buying time, when she spotted Cecile and Allison at the Hufflepuff table. Walking over to them, she wondered if it was okay for a Ravenclaw to stand next to the Hufflepuff table before the feast started. Hoping a professor wouldn't yell at her, she rushed over to the two girls.
"Hello, Cecile! Hello, Allison," she said cheerfully. "Excited to be back?"

She was about to make an excuse and move away when he finally answered. "I've never seen a real Qudditch match," she said wistfully. "Was it fun?" Maybe she would have to find a way to get to one next summer. "My summer was good I suppose, boring, but good. Other than the zoo in Diagon Alley, did you get a chance to see it?, we didn't do much else." Which had been just fine with her. She had to do things during school, she didn't want to during summer too! "Are you going to try out for the House Qudditch team? I heard a few of the old players graduated last year." They hadn't even had tryouts in her first two years, the teams had all been filled.

Regis had heard about this zoo in Diagon Alley, but he had prior plans with a Muggle boy he had met outside of London. He now wished he hadn't stayed at the boys home for such a long duration, because of what he missed out on. As a third year, you must... err... know a lot of spells?"

The Great Hall was as inviting as ever. The sky seemed so much more interesting when you were inside a large room. He wandered over to the Hufflepuff table, wondering where he might sit. There was a bit more freedom when you were older, so long as you left room for the new first years. But once he saw a familiar grouping of people, it wasn’t a difficult choice.
“Ladies,” Alistair said, nodding to Cecile and Allison as he took a seat across from the latter, next to Joe. The young boy was noticing more and more lately how frequently he was in the company of these girls, as well as several others. He sometimes felt the urge to be closer to his few male friends. “Joe.” He smiled. “Did Mary enjoy the trip here?” He knew that she had been curious about apparition. Knowing Joe and she would have taken the portkey, he was intrigued as to how it went. It seemed that Alistair only talked to Joe about his sister anymore, but she was a good topic for discussion. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind being talked about, if she ever found out.

First came the faint sounds of those who weren’t too nervous to speak – or those who were too nervous to keep quiet. Then there were footsteps and, finally, the parade of eleven year olds walked in. Not wanting to have to repeat herself, Eleanor waited until all of the students had found a place to stand and fell silent. “Good evening, I am Professor Penvellyn. In a moment, I will escort you into the Hall where you will be sorted into your houses.” A slight murmur of excitement washed through the crowd.
After clearing her throat, Eleanor proceeded. “Your house will be your new home and family. Excellent performance in class and good deeds will earn you points. Breaking rules or misbehavior will result in a loss of points. The house with the most points at the end of the year will receive the House Cup.” Again a small wave of whispers took over the first years, but the professor needed to press on. “Please, follow me.” She turned about and waved her wand, causing the doors to open for her and the students.
Leading the group up the path between the two middle tables, she stopped just shy of the staff table. She waved her wand again and a stool appeared, one final time, and the Sorting Hat came whizzing around the corner and into the Hall, floating well above the heads of all the students. She set it upright on the stool. A second passed, and then the seam holding the brim to the rest of the hat split wide open and a song sprung forth.
Another year is upon us,
And much like those that came before,
New Students join us at Hogwarts,
I’ve been tasked with the sorting chore.
Come up now, don’t be shy,
The process is very fast.
I take a quick look inside your mind,
Before you take your place at last.
What is the difference, you may
Be thinking while you wait.
Four houses make up our strong school,
Each with individual traits.
Slytherin envisioned a house of
Wizards ambitious and great
While Ravenclaw created a home
For those with wit and urge to debate.
Gryffindor seeks those with endless
Courage and great loyalty,
And Hufflepuff accepts all with an open heart
And are not afraid of drudgery.
With all that you now know and
What I shall soon discover
It’s time for the Sorting to begin,
Simply slip under my cover.
“When I call your name, please come forward and take a seat.” Eleanor unrolled a scroll of parchment with the names of all the students standing before her on it. One at a time, she called them out and placed the hat upon their heads.
{{OOC: Post your own sorting, don’t feel the need to post in alphabetical order. 2nd and 3rd years, if you haven’t posted yet, post as if you had been there before the first years walked in unless you intend to arrive after the ceremony all together. Welcome your new housemates warmly!}}

She saw the Professor flick her wrist and a grungy old hat came zooming into view. The magic was a bit of a shock but nothing compared to when the hat started singing. Singing! A singing hat no less! Meghan was sure she would never get used to the magic that would now fill her days. She tried to listen to the hat's song but found her attention being brought to the staff table instead. These were to be the people teaching her for the next several years. Meghan knew by the looks on their faces it would be wise to be in their good graces.
The sound of her name being called brought Meghan back to earth. She hurried to the stool where the old hat lay. She sat down and waited for the hat to be lifted unto her head. It seemed no sooner than the hat had been placed on her head that it bellowed out "GRYFFINDOR!" Feeling more than a bit dizzy and with her stomach in knots Meghan approached the gold and red table.

"Wilkins, Mary"
Calmly she stepped up towards the stool and took a seat. She wondered how many people other than Joe had caught her name and knew that she was his sister. That small crowd sat around him surely did, or at least a couple of them who had visited the farm over the summer. She wonered if she would be joining them in a moment or whether she would be required to sit elsewhere. Was it common practice for family to be sorted into the same house?
The hat started speaking to her, but she got the impression that the words would reach no ears but her own. "Hmm, Wilkins sister of Wilkins" it mused "let's see here. You hope to be sorted into Hufflepuff with your brother but I can not guarantee you will get your wish. I have split families before now. Where do you belong?" Mary sighed but she remained reasonably composed. If she was destined to follow another path then so be it, it would be nice to Join Joe though and she still clung on to the hope that it might happen.
"Not a bad mind I see" it mused "and you can be brave if need be. Not a great deal of ambition but I see great compasson, a caring nature and a strong work ethic. Very well Miss Wilkins, you may join your brother in...." The hat was going to say it! She had heard the rhyme and the traits it mentioned last, according to the lyrics surely meant that she belonged in only one pace.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" the hat roared, and she was elated by the revelation. She could hear the cheers from the Hufflepuff table welcome her into their mist. Taking off the hat and laying it down on the chair, she stepped over toards the Hufflepuff table and took a seat beside Alistair who was sitting next to Joe. "I made it here Joe" she enthused "I'm in Hufflepuff too. Isn't that great?" She did indeed recognise most of the people around her although one face was unfamiliar "Hello, I'm Mary" she introduced herself to the girl sitting next to Allison.
